Row Italy · July 8 to July 15, 2008
Join us in Tuscany for an unparalleled sculling adventure featuring coaching from the finest Italian rowing coaches, training on a private rowing basin and a visit to the famous rowing club under the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy. For 8 days and 7 nights we will be spoiled by warm and welcoming Tuscan traditions, culture and hospitality as we are guests in the 12th century hill town of San Miniato. Visit some of the historic hill towns of Tuscany like Lucca, Volterra or San Gimignano; soak up the architecture and art while sampling the finest regional foods and wines. Bask in the essence of Tuscan culture and beauty while having the rowing experience of a lifetime.
Home for the week is a family run agriturismo (farm-B&B, roughly translated), with fabulous views, nice rooms, great cooking, and a swimming pool. Situated near the crest of one of the highest hills between Florence and Pisa, the view from the pool offers incredible vistas of the surrounding valleys full of olive trees and vineyards and is only walking distance from the center of San Miniato.
A typical morning begins with a traditional Italian breakfast before the 10 minute drive to the private rowing basin where our coach stands ready to hand out the morning program. Our after workout cappuccino rejuvenates us as we enjoy sharing stories of our morning row. After showers and changing we'll be hungry and ready for lunch, cucina italiana prepared from the finest fresh seasonal ingredients. Later we head off to explore some of the local wonders. We are in the hands of locals so we are treated to views of cities and culture most tourists never see. Then of course there's dinner, always spirited conversation while feasting on the finest the region has to offer in local restaurants specifically chosen for their selection of local specialties. This is your "off the beaten path" vacation we everyone dreams about. Each week is tailored to the season, the weather, the rowing conditions, and the festivals that might be occurring. We see more than the tourist sites, we are rowers in Italy for a full week of fun.
Enzo Ademollo, head coach and co-founder of Terralba Rowing Camp, has decades of experience coaching rowers of all ages as well as being the national coordinator of masters' rowers and on the Italian National Rowing Council.
Eliza Camp, a native English speaker with years of living in Italy and co-founder of Terralba, studied under wooden boat building master Graeme King and in the winter is a professional boat restorer and builder.
Pamela Abraham, a Los Angeles rower, founder of Callisto Tours, accompanies the rowers throughout the week. She is available to answer questions, expedite arrangements and assist in handling organizational matters before and during the holiday. We look forward to another grand Terralba/Callisto Tours collaboration. It's been nothing but good rowing and lots of fun so far!
